- We are continuing with Chapter 5 this week. We will be identifying, showing and drawing groups of 21 to 31. We will also read and write the numbers 21 to 31. We will then compare numbers to 31. We will identify a number as being less than, greater than, or equal to another number. We will also order numbers up to 31 and see what number comes before, in between and after a determined number.
- We will be starting Part 2 of our Skills Handbook: Solve Problems. We will talk about how scientists gather information about a problem in order to get a solution. Those solutions need to be planned and tested to make sure they solve the problem. Once a solution is determined scientists can share their solution!

- We will begin Ch. 8 God Made All People. In this chapter we will learn that God made everyone and that God loves all people. We will talk about how we are all different and that is exactly the way God wanted it! How boring it would be if we were all the same!!
- We will be ending Chapter 2 this week. We are finishing up patterns and pattern rules and will be taking our Check Your Progress on Friday. Please review this as it covers all of our lessons from the second half of Chapter 2. We will be having our Chapter 2 test on Monday. It will cover plane shapes (triangle, square, rectangle, circle), solid shapes (sphere, rectangular prism, cube, cone, cylinder), and patterns. A look ahead...we will be skipping over Chapter 3 and moving to Chapter 4. Feel free to do any pages in the workbook at home that were not done for Chapter 1-3. I do ask that you do not work ahead. - We will be talking about Halloween and how to stay safe on Tuesday. Since we are Nature Spies this week and we talked about flowers last week we will continue our discussion on plant parts and life cycles. We will label a plant and will be cutting and pasting the life cycle of a pumpkin!
Week 8 ~ October 23rd - 27th
This week we will listen, talk, sing, read and write about flowers. The children will learn that flowers have parts that do different jobs and that flowers make fruits and seeds. We will read Flowers by Vijaya Khisty Bodach. We will learn six new Amazing Words: seeds, buds, bloom, fruits, stem, and petals. Amazing words help build vocabulary.

- Compare and Contrast ~ When we compare, we tell how things are alike or the same. When we contrast, we tell how things are different or not the same. Good readers look for how things are alike and different to help them understand what they read.

- Nouns for More Than One ~ This week we are learning about nouns that name more than one person, animal, place, or thing. When we use a noun for more than one, we usually add an -s to the end of the noun.

- This week we will be starting Ch. 7 Ordinary Time. In this chapter we will learn that during Ordinary Time we celebrate the lives of the saints. We will be introduced to Saint Peter, Saint Patrick and Saint Joseph. Please remember your October Family Project is due Monday, October 23rd.
Math ~
- We will almost be to the end of Chapter 2 by the week's end. We are talking about patterns and identifying pattern rules (the part that is repeated). This week we will be working with shape patterns, size patterns, and growing patterns. Please do not forget to do the Math homework each week. We will be doing a Check Your Progress at the beginning of next week, which will be followed by a Chapter 2 test.

This week we will listen, talk, sing, read and write about machines helping people. The children will learn that working with machines helps get a lot of work done and helps with many different jobs. We will read Dig Dig Digging by Margaret Mayo and Alex Ayliffe. We will learn six new Amazing Words: scooping, swooshing, squelching, gobbling, spinning, and rumbling. Amazing words help build vocabulary.

- We will continue with Chapter 2 ~ Geometry and Patterns. We will talk about circles and then we will be combining smaller shapes to make a larger shape. There will be a Check Your Progress which means we are halfway through the chapter. Please review the Check Your Progress that will be coming home midweek. We have studied Solid Shapes: sphere, rectangular prism, cone, cylinder, cube and Plane Shapes: rectangle, square, circle and triangle. After our Check Your Progress we will start on our second half of Chapter 2, Patterns.
Social Studies ~
- We will continue our Unit on Community Helpers and fire safety. Students will recognize that some community helpers (police, firefighters, doctors, dentists, etc.) may be trusted adults. A trusted adult is someone who cares for you and keeps you safe and healthy. Students should begin practicing their personal information such as their name, address and phone number. We will be assessing this information for the report card. We learned a lot of important information from Firefighter Farrell last Friday! Please talk with your child about what they learned. They should remember these important points:
- Stop, drop and roll...don't forget to cover your eyes, nose and mouth!
- Make sure you have an escape plan which includes a family meeting spot.
- You should never hide from a firefighter. The firefighter is there to help you get out.
- Never stay in a burning house. Get out as quickly as you can!
- If you wake up and smoke is in your room, you should crawl to the door. We learned smoke rises and there is cleaner air down low.

This week we will listen, talk, sing, read and write about friendship. We will learn that playing with others helps us to share fun experiences and helps us to share a common goal. We will read Smash! Crash! by David Shannon. We will learn six new Amazing Words: signals, dud, proper, pirates, perfect, and fabulous. Amazing words help build vocabulary.

- Chapter 5 introduces us to the next gift that God created for us ... animals!! The students will learn that God made all kinds of animals and that we can thank God for this wonderful gift by taking care of them. We will learn about one of God's friends who took care of animals!
- We will continue with Ch. 2 and working with Solid Shapes (cylinder, cube, sphere, cone, and rectangular prism) and Plane Shapes (square, rectangle, circle, and triangle). We will take a closer look at our Solid Shapes and name the Plane Shapes that are on the flat surfaces of the Solid Shapes. We will then talk about triangles, squares, and rectangles and see how many corners and sides each shape has. Wow, isn't Kindergarten so smart?!
- This week we will shift our focus from Science to Social Studies. We will be talking about Fire Safety. The children will learn that cooperating with others helps them have a fun time and helps them learn new things. We will learn six new Amazing Words: bakery, fire station, park, post office, library, and chaperone. Amazing words help build vocabulary.

- Chapter 4: God Gives Us the Land: The students will learn that God filled the land with many gifts and that God wants us to take care of the gifts of the land. We will be reading a short story about Saint Rosa of Lima and her love for God and God's gifts of the land.
- We will be finishing Part 1: The Nature of Science this week. We have talked about our senses, how scientists work together to ask and answer questions, all about different science tools and how science rules keep us safe! This week we will do a fun experiment and read about a kid inventor.

This week we will listen, talk, sing, read and write about how families cooperate. We will read Plaidypus Lost by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummal. The children will learn that support from their families helps them take care of themselves and take care of their friends. We will learn six new Amazing Words: platypus, lost, market, around, found, and groceries. Amazing words help build vocabulary.

- This week we will start Ch. 2: God Gave Us Light. Students will understand that light is one God's gifts to us. He made the sun, moon and stars! Imagine life without these wonderful gifts?! Students will understand that God gave us these gifts because he loves and cares for us. Thank you God!!

- We are continuing our first part of science, The Nature of Science. We will continue to ask questions and work together to find the answers. We will learn that we can observe with our senses. We can look, hear, smell, touch and taste!
Week 2 ~ September 11th - 15th
This week we will listen, talk, sing, read, and write about how children cooperate. We will read The Little School Bus by Carol Roth. The children will learn that when children ride the bus together it helps them get to school and helps them arrive safely. We will begin our learning centers and will talk about the importance of sharing and cooperation when working together. We will learn six new Amazing Words : first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth. Amazing words help to build oral vocabulary.

- We will start Ch. 1: God Made All Things. The students will learn that God made the whole world and that everything God made is good! We need to praise and thank God for all these wonderful gifts that we see everyday. A great way to thank God is to take care of these gifts! We will talk about all the ways we can do our part to take care of God's world.
Science ~
- We begin our Science unit, The Nature of Science this week. We will talk about what science is and how scientists ask questions and try to find answers. Scientists don't always work alone; in fact, we will be working together to find answers! We will be using our senses to observe.

- Tuesday, Sept. 5th is our first day of school! I am so excited to start our year together! This week we will talk about feelings (especially those first day of school feelings!), Kindergarten rules and procedures, and how to be a good friend!
